Abstract
In die jaar 1539 rig kardinaal Sadoleto ’n brief aan Genève om die stad te beweeg om terug te keer tot die Rooms-Katolieke kerk. Hierin beskryf hy die hervormers as enige onbestendige „anonyme, verbitterde mensen, die maar heen en weer gedreven worden en niet tot rust kunnen komen”. Vir hierdie Roomse kardinaal is die reformatore dus niks anders nie as leë miswolke, deur die wind voortgedrewe sonder oorsprong en sonder doel. Daarmee het kardinaal Sadoleto terselfdertyd sy siening op die Reformasie self weergegee. Dit is maar 'n onbestendige, verbitterde, rustelose uitbarsting van ’n klompie waansinniges teen die Roomse kerk wat hy op tipies Roomse kerkverheerlikende wyse sien as „die éne door Christus gestichte eeuwige katholieke kerk, altijd door Gods Geest geleid, altijd oorsprong en grond van zegen”.Copyright information
