Die heidelbergse kategismus 400 jaar in diens

Abstract

In 1555 het die godsdiensvrede van Augsburg tot stand gekom, waardeur die leg aan die veiskillende Duitse Landvorste toegeken is om te beslis oor die godsdiens wat as die offisiële in daardie gebied erken sou word. As gevolg van liierdie reëling moes die vors dus bepaal of die Lutherse Kerk of die Hoomse die lieersende sou wees, en ooreenkomstig sodanige beslissing moes die onderdane dan liandel. So was dit moontlik dat ’n vors van een van die gebiede van die Duitse ryk kon bepaal dat die Lutherse godsdiens binne die grense van sy land die offisiële gods­ diens sou wees, terwyl sy onmiddellike opvolger weer die Roomse gods­ diens tot die posisie kon verlief en die Lutherse kon onderdruk. Hierdie bepaling was net van toepassing op die aanhangers van die Augsburgse konfessie en die Rooms-katolieke, want die Calviniste was daarvan uitgesluit. Nieteenstaande hierdie feit het daar tog in enkele state van die Duitse ryk soos bv. in die Keurvorstedom die Paltz, ’n ander reeling gegeld nl. dat die vors, in hierdie geval keurvors Frederik III vail die Paltz, die Gereformeerde godsdiensvorm ingevoer het. En dit is in hierdie verband wat by in 1562 die opdrag aan twee jong teoloë, Zacharias Ursinus en Casper Olevianus, gegee het om ’n leerboek op te stel. Die resultaat vaii hierdie opdrag was die so bekende Heidelbergse Kategismus, waarvan die vierde eeufees nou internasionaal lierdenk word.
