Die kerk en christendom in Afrika: 'n inleidende oorsig

Abstract

In hierdie fase van Afrika se geskiedenis is sy konfron- tasie met die kerk van Christus en die koninkryk van die hemele uiters aktueel. Dit is só in historiese sin, omdat die nie-Christelike volke van hierdie kontinent deur hulle aanra- king van die 19e eeu af met die Weste as toentertydse draer van die Christendom tot aktiewe deelname in die wêreldge- skiedenis en tot groter self- en wêreldbewustheid gebring is. Dit is ook die geval vanweë die groot ideologiese botsings onder die wêreldmagte. Maar dit is nog meer só in prinsipiële sin, deurdat elke volk geplaas word voor die allesbeslissende keuse: „Wie dink julle is die Christus?” (Matth. 22 : 42). Deur sy kontak met die Weste het die vraag tot Afrika gekom. Deur die betrokkenheid by die huidige wêreldgebeure het die beantwoording daarvan so dringend aktueel geword.
