Abstract
Op 24 Augustus in die jaar 410 n.C. het daar iets plaasgevind wat nie alleen in die destydse wêreld ’n verskriklike, skokkende gebeurtenis was nie maar ook vir die Christendom, en met name die kerk, onberekenbare gevolge ge- had het: Die magtige Rome het geval! Op daardie dag het die Gote met hulle koning Alarik die eertyds gevierde hoofstad van die hoog geroemde Romeinse Ryk ingeneem en dit m et hulle hordes geplunder. Na twaalf eeue om presies te wees: 1 163 jaar na sy stigting — het Rome ondergegaan.1 En daarmee het ’n mite van twaalf eeue ondergegaan.2 Daarmee het ’n eeue- oue heidense staatsfilosofie ook ineengestort. Maar, meer nog, met die val van Rome in die begin van die vyfde eeu het die gangbare beskouing van die kerk dramaties, heeltemal ingetuimel.Copyright information
